New players lose money fast not because they play hands badly, but because they play the wrong hands in the first place. Get your starting hand selection right and everything else in your game gets easier.

The Four Hand Tiers

Instead of memorising 169 possible starting hands, group them into four tiers. This is how strong players actually think at the table.

1. Premium hands

AA, KK, QQ, AK. These are worth raising and re-raising from any position. You will not get dealt them often — play them hard when you do.

2. Strong hands

JJ, TT, 99, AQ, AJ, KQ. Strong enough to open-raise from most positions, but be ready to slow down if you face a lot of resistance (a big raise or multiple callers).

3. Speculative hands

Suited connectors (like 9♠8♠), small-to-medium pairs (88 down to 22), and suited aces (A5 suited, A2 suited). These hands don’t win by themselves — they win by making straights, flushes, or sets that opponents don’t see coming. Best played cheaply, in position, against multiple opponents.

4. Marginal and trash hands

Offsuit hands like K9, Q8, J4, and anything with a low kicker. These lose money over the long run for most players. The single fastest way to improve your win rate is folding these before the flop instead of “seeing what happens.”

Starting Hands by Position

The same hand can be a raise from the button and a fold from early position. Position changes everything because it determines how much information you have before you act.

Position

Recommended opening range

Early position (UTG)

Premium and strong hands only — 77+, AJ+, KQ

Middle position

Add suited connectors and more suited aces — 55+, A9+, KJ+, suited broadways

Late position / Button

Widest range — any pair, any suited ace, most suited connectors, strong offsuit hands

Blinds (defending)

Depends on raise size and who raised — generally tighter than the button, wider than early position

3 Rules for Using a Starting Hand Chart

Tighten up early, loosen up late. Acting first means acting with the least information. Save your speculative hands for when you’re closer to the button.

Adjust for how many players are still in the hand. Speculative hands like suited connectors go up in value with more players (more ways to get paid on a big hand); premium hands go up in value with fewer players (less chance someone else also has a monster).

Read the table, not just the chart. A chart is a starting point. Against very tight opponents you can open wider; against loose, aggressive tables you may need to tighten even a “standard” range.

Common Starting Hand Mistakes

Overvaluing suited cards. Suited only adds about 2–3% equity to a hand. K7 suited is still a weak hand — it’s just slightly less weak than K7 offsuit.

Limping too often. Calling the big blind with a wide range instead of raising or folding invites multiple players in and gives up initiative. Strong players raise or fold far more than they limp.

Playing every Ace. A9 offsuit from early position looks tempting because “it’s got an Ace,” but it’s a trap hand that makes a weak top pair more often than it makes anything strong.

Starting hand discipline is the single highest-leverage skill you can build as a new player — it costs nothing and pays off in every session.
